Every year the Botanic Gardens in South Auckland, organizes an art sculpture trail. This year’s exhibition runs during the summer months . In organising the exhibition they aim to make art accessible to the community, by displaying the art in a park open to the public. At the same time the organisers hope that the visitors prolong their visit, and go for a walk in the garden and learn more about the New Zealand vegetation.
The artworks displayed (20 in total) are chosen via a competition in the months leading up to the exhibition. Once the final decisions have been made the artists then have to raise the funds necessary, to enable him or her to build the sculpture.
The Alterno Foundation responded to a pledge for funding from one of the artists as it supports the concept behind the sculpture trail. It is different way of exposing the members of the public to art and nature at the same time.
